Description

1. What This Practice Is Based On

"Use intent, not force"

Classical Tai Chi writing contains a core instruction: use intent, not force . What that means in practice is that the work is done through attention and whole-body coordination, not by pushing with any one part. That's why Tai Chi looks slow but is demanding in detail — every movement has to be carried all the way through, never cut short.

"Clear empty and full" — the shift of weight

Another central principle is clearly distinguishing empty and full: the body's weight always sits clearly over one leg, while the other is empty. The whole practice is a continuous transfer of weight between the two legs. The slower and clearer that transfer, the better the practice.

"Round" and "unbroken" — no straight lines, no pauses

There are no straight lines in Tai Chi: the arms travel in arcs and every turn draws a circle. Nor are there pauses between movements — the end of one form is the beginning of the next. Traditionally this continuous quality is described as "like drawing silk"

"An upright body"

Tai Chi asks for an upright body : the crown of the head lifting upward, the spine vertical, no leaning forward or back. That requirement is held for the whole session — the movement can get large, but the posture never gets lost.

How the modern view fits

From a modern movement perspective, Tai Chi is a low-intensity, full-body practice built on constant weight shifting. It is particularly useful for balance and lower-body stability, because every movement asks you to stay steady while standing on one leg. It moves slowly throughout, requires no prior experience, and suits any age.
